One such student, Victoria, traveled from Argentina to study English for three months in Cambridge, Mass. this fall. But she says the fact that she obtained enough US dollars to actually get here was "a miracle."

Between cash she had set aside every month and a gift from her grandfather, she had enough money for a course at Kaplan International.?The challenge, Victoria says, came from Argentina's recent currency controls.

In an attempt to keep dollars in Argentina amid a wave of capital flight,?the country's tax office in May introduced a series of hurdles for citizens wanting to travel abroad with foreign currency. The government relies on money from the central bank and nationalized pension system to pay international lenders who typically require their payments in international currency.

The Argentine currency is the peso, and just over a decade since the country?s 2001 economic meltdown, dollars are seen as more stable and thus desirable.?The lack of confidence many Argentines have in their own currency, highlighted just last year by?increased capital flight?in the lead up to Ms. Kirchner's October reelection, put those payments at risk.?

Victoria, who asked her last name not be used for fear of having trouble exchanging pesos for dollars in the future, says she filled out a form in August to purchase the US currency and was approved for $8,000 dollars. She called it a miracle because she says many people have been turned away for seemingly no reason. Her boyfriend, for example, won?t be able to visit because his request was denied. The rest of her expenses are going on her credit card.

At the Harvard event Thursday, Kirchner spoke to an audience of 100?students, faculty, and community members on topics ranging from the global recession to human rights, and answered questions from a handful of students?? including a question on currency controls.?

Her response was in keeping with her confrontational style.?

?I think Argentines travel very well,? she said, noting the nationals she has seen in places like Las Vegas, and even here, in Cambridge.??You are Argentine. You are here. So you don?t seem to have problems with dollars,? she told the Argentine graduate school student. ?You?re lucky enough to be at Harvard. Do you really think you can talk to me about currency controls?

?As president I have to take care of these reserves,? she said.

Marcia Florencia Chiaramonte, an Argentine Spanish teacher who has been working in the Boston area since before the currency controls were implemented this past spring, says she understands why the government has introduced restrictions.

Ms. Florencia says in order to make the peso stronger, the government has to stop people from using the dollar like it?s the official currency. ?The peso is our currency,? she says. ?There is a purpose to this ? the government is not being authoritarian.?

But, she acknowledges,??people don?t like that they have to explain why they are going on a trip and why they need the money.? Florencia says Argentines have to divulge how much they earn, where they are going, how long they are traveling, and the reason for their trip. ?They feel it?s an invasion,? she adds, noting that her parents recently visited and had no trouble getting dollars.

In Argentina ?there is a culture of complaining,? Florencia says. ?So people protest. They complain?. But I think most of [the president?s] policies are good for Argentina?

Slowdown galvanizes Polish opposition protesters

WARSAW (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of protesters marched through the Polish capital on Saturday, the start of an opposition drive to capitalize on the spluttering economy and try to loosen Prime Minister Donald Tusk's grip on power.

Poland's economy, the biggest in central Europe, has grown robustly even while its neighbors slipped into recession, handing Tusk high levels of support and leaving his opponents struggling to win credibility with voters.

Economic growth is expected to slow to just above 2 percent next year. That is healthy by the standards of most European countries but a jarring deceleration for Poles used to two decades of uninterrupted growth.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of the opposition Law and Justice Party, said ordinary Poles were no longer prepared to give Tusk's government, in its second term, the benefit of the doubt.

"These huge crowds mean strength. They mean that Poland has awakened. More and more Poles will be awakening. The cup of evil has overflowed. We Poles, we Polish patriots say 'no'," Kaczynski told protesters in Warsaw's Castle Square.

"Tusk will probably stand up and say he is the leader for difficult times. Do you want such a leader?" he said. "Honest businessmen and the working masses do not want that."

People close to the government say the downturn could prove the biggest political test yet for Tusk. He has established a reputation for steady and competent stewardship in a part of Europe more familiar with mercurial leaders.

Nevertheless, analysts and diplomats say the opposition is unable to exploit the slowdown because, while it has a strong base among the most devout of Poland's Catholics, it is too hard-line to win over voters in the middle ground.

It is against abortion, gay marriage and in vitro fertilization. That stance is in line with the teachings of the Catholic church, which is still powerful in Poland. But surveys show it does not resonate with young, urban middle classes.

Saturday's demonstration was the biggest in several months. Protesters, some of them clutching rosaries and portraits of the Virgin Mary, knelt on the tarmac in Warsaw's Three Crosses Square as a priest said mass before the march.

Banners demanded more generous terms for pensioners and a broadcast license for a television station run by a conservative Catholic cleric who opposes the government.

One grey-bearded protester, who gave his name as Wojciech, said the Communist cabal which used to rule Poland before the fall of the Berlin Wall had been replaced by another elite, this one preaching free market economics.

"Unemployment is so high," he said, holding up one end of a Law and Justice banner. "Under Communism you could get hit by a truncheon, and now the truncheon is the economy."

Tusk's government does not face re-election for another three years. The latest opinion polls show the prime minister's Civic Platform party still has a significant lead over the opposition, though the gap has narrowed. (Additional reporting by Patrycja Sikora; Editing by Robin Pomeroy)

Colbert to honor troops returning from Iraq

http://www.armytimes.com/news/2010/08/ap-stephen-colbert-to-honor-troops-082010/

NEW YORK ? Stephen Colbert is dusting off his camouflage suit.

The comedian will broadcast two special episodes of Comedy Central?s ?The Colbert Report? to celebrate the end of combat operations in Iraq and to honor returning troops.

On Sept. 8 and 9, the show will fill its audience with Iraq War veterans and active-duty service members. Others will be beamed in via satellite from Iraq, Afghanistan and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

?The Colbert Report,? which likes to parody over-the-top cable news graphics, is calling the episodes ?Been There, Won That: The Returnification of the American-Do Troopscape.?

Guests will include Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Jim Webb and the U.S. military commander in Iraq, Gen. Ray Odierno.

Odierno famously shaved Colbert?s head ? on President Obama?s orders ? when the comedian broadcast four episodes of the show from Baghdad last year. On that visit, Colbert donned a camouflage suit and reported from a desk supported by sand bags.

One of those Iraq episodes earned the show an Emmy nomination for writing for a variety, music or comedy series.

The 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, which exited Iraq on Wednesday, officially was designated the last combat brigade to leave Iraq under Obama?s plan to end combat operations there by Aug. 31. Some 50,000 members will stay another year in what is designated as a non-combat role.

Though Colbert?s normal mode is satire, he?s a strong supporter of the troops.

With the WristStrong bracelets he?s promoted since falling while running around his desk and breaking his wrist, he has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Yellow Ribbon Fund, a charity that assists injured service members and their families. He is a board member of DonorsChoose.org, which is raising money for the education of children of parents in the military.

?Sometimes,? Colbert said earlier to The Associated Press, ?my character and I agree.?

Women?s golf travels to Washington for the Cougar Cup

Gearing up for a new week of tournaments, the BYU women?s golf team head to Washington State to compete in the Cougar Cup.

After a rough beginning to their season last week, the women?s golf team has their spirits high and are ready to play their best on Monday.

?Today you could kind of just tell the attitude that the girls had, they came (to practice) and shared their positive experiences from what they had last week with the girls that didn?t travel,? assistant coach Juli Erekson said. ?Reuniting our team again I think just uplifted everybody, so they are really excited to go do better next week. We?re excited to play and to have another opportunity because we played really well our first round and so we want to go back out there; we know we can do it.?

The girls have been constructing ideas about how to improve their game for Washington.

?We?ve been practicing a lot with sticking to a game plan,? senior Amanda Keith said. ?Making sure that our emotions are in check and that everything that we?ve worked for will stay in touch. We?re working on going out there and having a solid game plan and not letting anything else get in our way.?

There has been a lot of talk from both the girls and coaches about the need to strengthen confidences as well.

?I know when coach Roberts and myself played, confidence came through preparation and so that?s kind of where we hit practice really hard,? Erekson said. ?We have drills, we have competitions, all things that simulate a competitive golf round; by doing those things that?s what builds confidence.?

It?s more than just drills and simulations for freshman Lea Garner.

?I think in golf you have to have a good attitude,? Garner said. ?That?s probably my biggest thing is trying to stay positive and have good self talk. A lot this season we?ve been talking about that and how we need to just be positive and visualize all our shots.?

Kieth said the Cougars have a team goal to average 306 or better each round and to make it to Regionals this year. There to help them achieve that goal is sports psychologist Craig Manning.

?We?ve been working with Craig Manning, our sports psychologist, just on studying proper objectives,? Erekson said. ?When you achieve those that builds confidence in itself; just like setting any minimal goal, whether it?s on the golf course or not, that will build confidence physically and mentally.?

The Cougars will play on the Washington State course beginning Monday morning and finishing Tuesday afternoon.

Adolescent male chimps in large community strive to be alphas

Friday, September 21, 2012

An Ohio University anthropologist reports the first observation of dominance relationships among adolescent male chimpanzees, which he attributes to the composition of their community.

Hogan Sherrow spent eight years studying the Ngogo community of chimpanzees in Kibale National Park in western Uganda. Ngogo is the biggest chimpanzee community on record, with more than 150 members and about twice as many males as found in other chimp communities across Africa.

Unlike their adult male counterparts, which have a well-documented dominance hierarchy, adolescent males have not been known to establish dominance relationships. During four field seasons between 2000 and 2004, however, Sherrow found that some adolescent males pant grunted to other adolescent males on a consistent basis. Research by Jane Goodall established that pant grunts are made by subordinate individuals to dominant ones, Sherrow explained.

"It calms hostilities. It means, 'I know that you're stronger than me, so don't beat me up.' It's like they're sending up the white flag," said Sherrow, an assistant professor of anthropology who published his recent findings in the journal Folia Primatologica.

After ranking the 17 adolescent males in order of dominance, Sherrow concluded that the biggest and oldest animals were at the top of the hierarchy. There were only two exceptions, males that appeared to act in a subordinate manner due to physical injuries.

Sherrow suggests that he observed dominance relationships in the adolescent males of this chimpanzee community due to its size and heightened competition for females. Each male in Ngogo must contend with 35 to 40 others, whereas most communities contain 10 to 15 competitors for mating. Adolescent male chimps also may vie for access to high-ranking adult males as a competitive strategy.

Adult male chimpanzees have clear and defined dominance relationships that depend on size, strength and the ability to form alliances in the community. The most dominant males have priority access to resources and potential mates and usually father more offspring.

"We should not be surprised that adolescent males can form these dominance relationships. Adults males form them, and adolescent males need to learn them at some point," Sherrow said.

Studies of other immature males in primate, mammal and even human communities with intense competition for resources also have found adolescent dominance hierarchies, he added.

Because the Ngogo community is unusually large, Sherrow noted that scientists should seek to observe this behavior in another neighboring community of this size to determine if a similar hierarchy can be documented. The Ngogo study site, located in the Ugandan rain forest, was established in 1995 and has been observed daily by researchers.

The recent study not only offers a new view of chimpanzee behavior, but could shed light on human power and dominance as well, Sherrow suggested.

"Because chimpanzees, along with bonobos, are our closest living relatives, understanding things like how and why they form dominance relationships helps us understand the drive for status and prestige in humans," he said.

Wake Forest and Florida State NFL Draft watch notes

Photo

(It's true, this game isn't until Saturday, but we wanted to get the preview up early. Look for several more up tomorrow)

We may now begin to properly evaluate Florida State defensive end Bjoern Werner. Through two games, the junior has a sparkling stat line with 6.5 tackles for loss and five tackles. But that came against Murray State and Savannah State. Wake Forest doesn't have much of an offensive line, but it's at least an FBS challenge for the relentless junior pass rusher. Now that fellow pass rusher Brandon Jenkins is out for the season with a foot injury, teams can key more on Werner. Lets see how he adjusts.

Also off to a strong start for the 2-0 Seminoles is quarterback EJ Manuel. He's completing 77 percent of his passes this season.

Wake Forest, which is off to its own 2-0 start, doesn't have many senior NFL Draft prospects. The Demon Deacons had four players taken in last year's draft and 10 in the last three years. But the team may not have a player taken in 2013. Lets just be frank. The best thing about Wake Forest is Martin Rickman, who runs SB Nation's Wake site Blogger So Dear. After the jump, watch lists, a solid matchup and a question.

Star-divide

Defense: No. 39 - Justin Jackson, OLB - 6'1, 220 pounds (Junior)

Key matchup: Florida State CB Xavier Rhodes vs. Wake Forest WR Michael Campanaro

Through two games, Campanaro has 22 receptions for 260 yards. That includes 13 catches for 164 yards last week against North Carolina. Rhodes overmatches him pretty easily from a size standpoint and he should be able to get physical with Campanaro. Rhodes has an interception and three pass deflections this season.

Question of the day:

Will Tank Carradine start an ascent up NFL Draft boards?

With Jenkins out for the season, Carradine has the opportunity to live up to his ability as a starter. Carradine certainly has the size and good athleticism for an end. But he's been limited to a backup role during his career.

Netanyahu deputy disagrees on setting Iran "red line"

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Benjamin Netanyahu's deputy for intelligence and atomic affairs on Thursday broke with the Israeli prime minister's call for Iran to be confronted with a "red line" beyond which its disputed nuclear program would face military attack.

In a broadcast interview, Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor appeared to side with the United States in balking at Netanyahu's repeated demand that it set Iran an ultimatum or risk seeing Israel launch region-rattling unilateral strikes.

Meridor's remarks also underscored debate within the leader's inner circle about potentially exacerbating the rift with Washington with a war that polls show most Israelis, including several senior security figures, would oppose.

"I don't want to set red lines or deadlines for myself," Meridor, one of several Netanyahu deputies who form the core of his security cabinet, told Israel's Army Radio when asked how much time remained before force against Iran should be used.

He called for international sanctions against Tehran to be intensified "so it understands that the price it is paying is mounting and that the only way to be rid of it is to stop the (nuclear) race, to arrive at an agreement, or an international understanding, that it is calling it quits".

"You always consider other options, for when everything else is exhausted. And I think that, for now, we have to continue with the pressure."

That echoed U.S. President Barack Obama, who seeks reelection in November and has tried to champion continued carrot-and-stick diplomacy with Iran while fending off charges by Republican rival Mitt Romney that he is soft on the Jewish state's security. Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons.

Obama, in an interview broadcast on Thursday with the U.S. Spanish-language network Telemundo, insisted he had set a red line for Iran, but offered no new specifics that would come close to meeting Netanyahu's demands for a tougher U.S. stance.

"I've stated repeatedly, publically, that red line, and that is we're not going to accept Iran having a nuclear weapon - not only because it threatens Israel, not only because it could potentially threaten the United States," he said. "It could also fall into the hands of terrorists and it would trigger a nuclear arms race in the region."

Obama has pressed Netanyahu, with whom he has had a strained relationship, to allow more time for sanctions and diplomacy to work. But Obama has not ruled out military action against Iran if all else fails.

Netanyahu's office did not immediately respond to the Meridor interview, which followed statements by Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman urging that the disagreement with the United States be worked out more discreetly. ID:nL5E8KB9DC]

Though he did not mention Netanyahu by name, Meridor lamented what he called "the excessive chit-chat of recent months" in Israel about how and whether to tackle its arch-foe.

He spoke of the importance of U.S. diplomatic and defence assistance to Israel, and took a more moderate view of a nuclear-armed Iran than Netanyahu, who has likened that prospect to a second Holocaust.

"I don't want to speak in apocalyptic ... Holocaust terms," said Meridor, a veteran member of the ruling, rightist Likud party. "I think that we are strong and we will overcome the challenges, but this is a serious challenge."

Though widely assumed to have an nuclear arsenal, Israel's conventional forces are designed for border wars and many experts - including the top U.S. general, Martin Dempsey - have voiced doubt over the degree to which they could damage the distant, dispersed and well-defended Iranian nuclear facilities.

In comments that may have been designed to hint at the feasibility of a secret solo strike, Netanyahu on Thursday praised the Israeli military during a meeting with its high command.

"From time to time, operations have been necessitated, and they were carried out with exemplary success," he said. "Israel's citizens should know what I know - that there is someone to depend on. There is someone who is ready for the job."

Iran: Hezbollah will defend us "easily" against Israeli attack

DUBAI (Reuters) - An aide to Iran's supreme leader said Israel's military threats had "put Israeli citizens one step away from the cemetery" and that Lebanese militant group Hezbollah was ready to hit back.

Yahya Rahim-Safavi, military adviser to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said the increasing threats from Israel to strike Iranian nuclear facilities were "foolish", the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) reported on Friday.

"The boldness and foolishness of Israeli officials in threatening the Islamic Republic, have put Israeli citizens one step away from the cemetery," he said.

"If, one day, the Israeli regime takes action against us, resistance groups, especially Hezbollah ... will respond more easily," said Safavi, a former commander in chief of Iran's Revolutionary Guards.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made increasing hints in recent weeks that Israel could strike Iran and has criticized U.S. President Barack Obama's position that sanctions and diplomacy should be given more time.

The heightened rhetoric has stoked speculation that Israel may attack before U.S. elections in November.

Hezbollah has said any attack on Iran would be met by strikes against Israeli and U.S. targets in the region, even if American forces played no role in the attack.

"A decision has been taken to respond and the response will be very great," Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said in a TV interview this month.

Shi'ite Muslim Hezbollah, founded with Iranian help during Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war, has grown from a militia into a powerful political and military force. It fought a 34-day war with Israel six years ago in which 1,200 people in Lebanon, mostly civilians, and 160 people in Israel, mostly soldiers, were killed.

Judge rules in favor of Legion in contested will

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? A U.S. judge has thrown out a lawsuit contesting the will of an elderly widow who gave some $60 million to the disgraced Roman Catholic religious order the Legion of Christ.

But Judge Michael Silverstein of Rhode Island Superior Court found evidence that the woman, Gabrielle Mee, had been unduly persuaded to change her trusts and will and give the Legion her money, detailing the process by which the Legion slowly took over control of her finances as she became more deeply involved in the movement.

Pope Benedict XVI took over the Legion in 2010 after a Vatican investigation determined that its founder, the late Rev. Marcial Maciel, lived a double life: he sexually molested seminarians and fathered three children by two women. The pope ordered a wholesale reform of the order after finding serious problems with its very culture, and named a papal delegate to oversee it.

The Maciel scandal has been particularly damaging for the church given that the Mexican-born priest was held up by Pope John Paul II as a model for the faithful, admired for his perceived orthodoxy and ability to bring in money and new seminarians.

It was that high esteem that attracted Mee, a devout Roman Catholic, to the Legion in the first place, Silverstein wrote in his Sept. 7 order throwing out a lawsuit filed by Mee's niece contesting her will.

The niece, Mary Lou Dauray, had alleged that Mee was defrauded by the Legion and unduly influenced by its priests into giving away her fortune. Mee's late husband was a one-time director of Fleet National Bank.

Silverstein, however, ruled that Dauray had no standing in the case. Dauray's attorney, Bernard Jackvony, said his client was considering an appeal.

While siding with the Legion in the case, Silverstein took pains in his 39-page ruling to cite evidence submitted by Dauray's attorneys that detailed the process by which the Legion wooed Mee, bending the rules to let her become a "consecrated" member of its lay movement, giving her privileged access to Maciel and inviting her on special trips to Rome and Mexico.

He cited letters from the Legion thanking Mee for her money, emphasizing how her generosity was "pleasing both the Lord and assisting his mission" while also satisfying her late husband's wishes.

Such fundraising tactics have long been a hallmark of the Legion: critics have pointed to the process by which typically good-looking priests would shower wealthy patrons with praise, access and spiritual guidance while persuading them to donate their fortunes.

"The transfer of millions of dollars worth of assets ? through will, trust and gifts ? from a steadfastly spiritual elderly woman to her trusted but clandestinely dubious religious leaders raises a red flag to this court," Silverstein wrote.

Maciel himself, whom Mee considered a living saint, gave her financial advice, and another Legion priest helped her with her estate planning, Silverstein wrote. He detailed how Mee, after she became consecrated, created a Legion-appointed committee to determine distributions from her trust and eventually gave the Legion full control over her finances.

Silverstein cited the Legion's own admission that consecrated women, who like nuns make promises of chastity, obedience and poverty, must donate half their assets to the Legion within 15 years and all their assets within 25 years.

At the same time, the Legion withheld full information from Mee about Maciel's misdeeds, which first came to light in 1997 with a newspaper article alleging the sexual abuse, Silverstein wrote. By 2006, Legion leaders say they knew of Maciel's child. Mee died May 16, 2008.

The Legion claimed in court filings that Mee was informed of Maciel's double life, but Silverstein cited evidence disputing that and noted that she had cut off support to another religious movement as soon as she learned that one of its founders had had sexual relations with another man.

"Plaintiffs argue, and the court recognizes, that this could reasonably indicate how Mrs. Mee would have acted if she had known of the allegations (or the extent of the allegations) against Father Maciel," Silverstein wrote.

An email seeking comment Friday from the Legion was not immediately returned.

The Legion has been facing a serious slump in fundraising following the revelations of Maciel's double life. Properties have been sold off and schools have been closed as the Legion's once exponential growth has contracted, with dozens of priests leaving the order and fewer seminarians joining its ranks.

According to testimony cited by the order, the Legion' $35 million purchase of a property in Thornwood, New York, in 1996 was made possible by guarantees from the Legion and Mee that her trusts would pay the Legion's $25 million bank loan. The Legion announced in April it was selling the property, where seminarians studied philosophy, to help reduce its debts.

Franchise Basics: Meeting Your Goals : Canadian Business ...

By Rhonda Sanderson

Toronto-based Liana Ling was a lawyer at a bank when she decided to follow her entrepreneurial spirit. Now, as a WSI Digital Marketing franchisee, she says she has achieved a better work-life balance. Photo courtesy Sanderson & Associates

Many successful franchisees never even planned on running their own business, but ended up doing so after they discovered how the franchising business model could provide the answer to their personal and professional goals.

Toronto-based Liana Ling, for instance, became a WSI Digital Marketing franchisee three years ago to gain more control over her work schedule, like Perdomo. After spending more than a decade as a lawyer for a bank, she left her profession and followed her entrepreneurial spirit to become a business owner.

Although she was certain she wanted to pursue a career as a full-time entrepreneur, Ling was wary at first about owning a business, given her only work experience was as a lawyer. After thoroughly researching WSI?s business model?which focuses heavily on providing support to franchisees, with personal coaches, electronic learning (e-learning) courses and training workshops?she decided to take the plunge into business ownership.

?I became a franchisee because I wanted more control over my time and schedule than I had when I was a lawyer,? Ling says ?It took a long time to feel confident enough to take the plunge into business ownership, but now that I?ve done it, I?ve finally reached the work-life balance that I always craved and could never find as a lawyer.?

HBT: Jeter injured running out grounder

Busting it down the line trying to beat out a double-play ball, Derek Jeter suffered a bone bruise in his left ankle when he hit the bag awkwardly in the eighth inning of Wednesday?s game against the Red Sox.

Jeter was clearly in some pain and he was attended to after initially trying to make it back to the dugout on his own. Manager Joe Girardi and the trainer came out to look at him and help him off the field.

Girardi said after the game that Jeter has been bothered by soreness in the area for days, but that he expected his shortstop would attempt to play in Thursday?s series finale.

Casey McGehee replaced Jeter, with Jayson Nix moving from third base to short. Nix and Eduardo Nunez presumably would share time at short if Jeter is forced to miss a few games.

Planets can form in the galactic center

ScienceDaily (Sep. 11, 2012) ? At first glance, the center of the Milky Way seems like a very inhospitable place to try to form a planet. Stars crowd each other as they whiz through space like cars on a rush-hour freeway. Supernova explosions blast out shock waves and bathe the region in intense radiation. Powerful gravitational forces from a supermassive black hole twist and warp the fabric of space itself.

Yet new research by astronomers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics shows that planets still can form in this cosmic maelstrom. For proof, they point to the recent discovery of a cloud of hydrogen and helium plunging toward the galactic center. They argue that this cloud represents the shredded remains of a planet-forming disk orbiting an unseen star.

"This unfortunate star got tossed toward the central black hole. Now it's on the ride of its life, and while it will survive the encounter, its protoplanetary disk won't be so lucky," said lead author Ruth Murray-Clay of the CfA. The results are appearing in the journal Nature.

The cloud in question was discovered last year by a team of astronomers using the Very Large Telescope in Chile. They speculated that it formed when gas streaming from two nearby stars collided, like windblown sand gathering into a dune.

Murray-Clay and co-author Avi Loeb propose a different explanation. Newborn stars retain a surrounding disk of gas and dust for millions of years. If one such star dived toward our galaxy's central black hole, radiation and gravitational tides would rip apart its disk in a matter of years.

They also identify the likely source of the stray star -- a ring of stars known to orbit the galactic center at a distance of about one-tenth of a light-year. Astronomers have detected dozens of young, bright O-type stars in this ring, which suggests that hundreds of fainter Sun-like stars also exist there. Interactions between the stars could fling one inward along with its accompanying disk.

Although this protoplanetary disk is being destroyed, the stars that remain in the ring can hold onto their disks. Therefore, they may form planets despite their hostile surroundings.

As the star continues its plunge over the next year, more and more of the disk's outer material will be torn away, leaving only a dense core. The stripped gas will swirl down into the maw of the black hole. Friction will heat it to high enough temperatures that it will glow in X-rays.

"It's fascinating to think about planets forming so close to a black hole," said Loeb. "If our civilization inhabited such a planet, we could have tested Einstein's theory of gravity much better, and we could have harvested clean energy from throwing our waste into the black hole."

Headquartered in Cambridge, Mass., the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) is a joint collaboration between the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the Harvard College Observatory. CfA scientists, organized into six research divisions, study the origin, evolution and ultimate fate of the universe.

U.S. has no right to block Israel on Iran: Netanyahu

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday said the United States had forfeited any moral right to stop Israel taking action against Iran's nuclear program because it had refused to be firm with Tehran itself.

In comments which appeared to bring the possibility of an Israeli attack on Iran closer, Netanyahu took the administration of President Barack Obama to task after Washington rebuffed his own call to set a red line for Tehran's nuclear drive.

"The world tells Israel 'wait, there's still time'. And I say, 'Wait for what? Wait until when?'" said Netanyahu, speaking in English.

"Those in the international community who refuse to put red lines before Iran don't have a moral right to place a red light before Israel," he added, addressing a news conference with Bulgaria's prime minister.

Netanyahu has been pushing Obama to adopt a tougher line against Iran, arguing that setting a clear boundary for Iran's uranium enrichment activities and imposing stronger economic sanctions could deter Tehran from developing nuclear weapons and mitigate the need for military action.

But on Monday U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the United States would not set a deadline in further talks with Iran, saying there was still time for diplomacy to work.

Netanyahu's comments came as diplomats said six world powers - including the United States - were poised to voice "serious concern" about Iran's uranium enrichment program and to urge Tehran to open up access to suspected nuclear sites.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said on Tuesday that Washington would have little more than a year to act to stop Tehran if it decided to produce a nuclear weapon.

Netanyahu has had a strained relationship with Obama over Iran and other issues, such as Jewish settlement building in the occupied West Bank.

But he has never put differences with Obama - who has pledged he will "always have Israel's back" and is deep in a re-election campaign - in the context of morality.

The website of Israel's Haaretz daily newspaper said Netanyahu had carried out "an unprecedented verbal attack on the U.S. government".

Iran, which denies it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons, has threatened to retaliate against Israel and U.S. interests in the Gulf if it attacked, and Obama's re-election bid could be thrown off course by a new war.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney has accused him of throwing Israel "under the bus".

DEADLINE

Without mentioning Clinton by name but pointedly parroting her use of the word "deadline", Netanyahu said not setting a clear boundary for Iran would only encourage Iran to continue its quest for nuclear arms.

"If Iran knows that there is no deadline, what will it do? Exactly what it's doing. It's continuing, without any interference, towards obtaining a nuclear weapons capability and from there, nuclear bombs," he said.

"So far we can say with certainty that diplomacy and sanctions haven't worked. The sanctions have hurt the Iranian economy but they haven't stopped the Iranian nuclear program. That's a fact. And the fact is that every day that passes, Iran gets closer and closer to nuclear bombs," he added.

Netanyahu also watched troops conduct an infantry exercise in the Golan Heights, where he said "the Israeli army is prepared for any challenge". Israel captured the rocky plateau from Syria in a 1967 war and then annexed it in a move never recognized internationally.

Widely thought to be the Middle East's only nuclear power, Israel says a nuclear-armed Iran would be a threat to its existence.

Recent tougher Israeli rhetoric on the issue has stoked speculation that Israel might attack Iran before the U.S. ballot in November, believing that Obama would give it military help and not risk alienating pro-Israeli voters.

But over the past week, Netanyahu, in calling for a "red line", had appeared to be backing away from military action and preparing the ground for a possible meeting with Obama this month, when both address the U.N. General Assembly in New York.

"The line is the president is committed to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, and he will use every tool in the arsenal of American power to achieve that goal," Jay Carney, a White House spokesman, said on Monday.

Netanyahu has faced opposition at home to the idea that Israel might attack Iran on its own. Opinion polls show a majority of Israelis do not want their military to strike Iran without U.S. support.

An Israeli cabinet minister on Tuesday invoked his country's ostensibly secret 2007 air raid on an alleged Syrian nuclear reactor to suggest Israel could successfully strike Iran without U.S. support.
