American Cancer Society event hits Portland next week - Oregon Live

Oregonians looking for an easy karma boost can get their fill at the American Cancer Society's cancer prevention study, which is stopping in the metro area next week.

The society's "Cancer Prevention Study-3" is a national effort seeking participants to build upon a series of studies that began in the 1950s.

The society hopes data from millions of participants will provide a glimpse into the, environmental, lifestyle and genetic links to cancer.

You won't get paid to participate, but it's also pretty painless.

From the society's announcement of the study:

Individuals will spend between 20-30 minutes at a local enrollment site to complete a brief survey, have their waist circumference measured and give a small blood sample. At home, individuals will complete a comprehensive survey packet that asks for information on lifestyle, behavioral, and other factors related to their health. Participants should expect a follow-up survey to update information every few years. ?

Men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 with no history of cancer are eligible to enroll at one of several metro area staging locations between July 10-14.

The society is calling the effort a "historic research study that has the potential to change the face of cancer for future generations."
