Grand Junction Family Evicted From Home Over Stolen Shoes ...

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (CBS4) ? A single mother and her three children may be spending their Christmas morning in a shelter this year. They are being evicted from their Grand Junction home over a stolen pair of shoes.

?I don?t know what I?m going to do,? mother Tanya Abbey said.

Abbey is in a tough spot. She and her family won?t be home for Christmas after her 13-year-old son Oran got caught shoplifting a pair of shoes ? an act that violated the family?s lease.

?My shoes were getting worn out ? it was getting cold, my feet were getting cold,? Oran said.

Now he has much more to worry about than cold feet.

?I let my mom down, like I let everybody down,? he said.

In a statement, the manager of Garden Village Apartments said any criminal activity on or near the premises is grounds for immediate eviction.

Oran said he didn?t realize his actions would put his entire family at risk.

?I thought it would just affect me. I had no idea it would affect my mom or my brother and sister, and I feel like if they should be kicking anybody out it should be me,? he said.

In just a couple of short weeks from now Abbey and her three children will have to pack up all of their things and leave their home. The family says they?re not sure where to turn, but most likely they?ll be spending their Christmas day in a shelter.

?It just makes me feel horrible. It makes me feel like I can?t even give my kids a Christmas now,? Abbey said. ?I have to pack up my stuff and store it, instead of putting up a tree.?

The family says it hopes it can find a room at the shelter, otherwise they don?t know where they will end up for the holidays.

CBS4 has learned there have been other issues at the apartment but the building management cannot comment because of a confidentiality agreement. It is not clear whether or not she has actually been issued an eviction order.
